Opinion: We did it!

Khalil Khalil came to Germany five years ago as a refugee, but he doesn’t see himself as one now. He speaks German, has an apartment and holds a trainee position. This was only possible with collective action, he writes.

“Wir schaffen das!” — “We can do it!” — a phrase that outraged some but that others accepted as a challenge. You can think what you like about Angela Merkel, but these words will remain the most signifant ones she has uttered during her long chancellorship.

That is partly because she has always stayed the course in tempestuous times and ensured stability. The phrase contributed enormously to her reputation — outside of Germany even more than inside the country itself. It is and remains omnipresent.

Merkel was very well-known in my home country of Syria long before ...

The plane carrying the US and Israeli delegations to Abu Dhabi has the word “peace” written on it in English, Hebrew, and Arabic.

It is also named after Kiryat Gat, a Jewish s...

“We can do this!” — Merkel’s famous words five years on

It’s five years to the day since German Chancellor Angela Merkel uttered her famous quote about taking in refugees. Today the numbers show that integration has made progress, though skepticism persists.

The start of the 2015 refugee crisis was a time of caution for some, while for others it was a time of fear and uncertainty.

Where do these people come from? Do they have a good education? Will they find jobs, an apartment?

Both the Biden and Trump campaigns are aiming to turn out LGBTQ voters.

Calling him a “champion for inclusion,” the national chamber of commerce representing LGBTQ business announced Monday that it is backing former Vice President Joe Biden, just the second presidential endorsement in the group’s over 20-year history.

The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), which describes itself as the “only national advocacy organization dedicated to expanding economic opportunities for the LGBT business community,” cited Biden’s support for LGBTQ rights during the Obama administration, and his push to pass the Equality Act, a bill that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orien...

US 2020: will the election truly reflect the people’s choice?

On Tuesday, September 1 at 19:30 GMT:
Election day in the United States is less than 10 weeks away, and there’s one thing Republicans and Democrats agree on – that it’s one of the most consequential presidential and congressional polls in the country’s history. But concerns are rising over whether people’s voices will be truly reflected through the ballot box.

US President Donald Trump, who is behind Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in most polls, has attacked mail-in voting. He says is open to widespread abuse, a claim voting experts reject. A series of recent orders by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to remove Postal Service mailboxes and sorting machines from service – most in key ‘battleground’ states – has angered Democrats who say it is an attempt to stop bal...
